Sampling with the EMU

A short tutorial by Jeremy Baguyos on sampling with the EMU 4XT.


SAMPLING: Getting Started Quickly (E-mu 4XT)


Getting sound samples from ROM presets, from CD and other removable media
And from the Live world via microphone

A. From presets (ROM) ROM bank is installed on 312 E-mu so it is ready to go
With presets

B. From CD

1. load desired CD into drive (be sure to wait a little after loading)
2. press DISK
3. Use cursor arrows to select (highlight) "D4 Toshiba"
4. Press Load (F4)
5. Bank: xxxxxxxx will be highlighted (selected). If not selected, use cursor
arrows to select it
6. Press Load (F6)
7. When asking to destroy current RAM bank and to continue, press OK(F6)
The newly selected bank will now load
8. Press DISK hardware button
9. Make sure D4 Toshiba CD-Rom X is selected
10. Press Browse (F2)
11. Press Banks (F3)
12. Use Alpha wheel to select the sound you want
13. After selecting the sound you want, press LOAD
14. Asks if you want to confirm. Press load again.

To change to a another sample on the same disk,

15. press DISK
16. use Alpha Wheel to select
17. Press load
18. when prompts you asks if you are sure, press load

To clear bank

19. press Master
20. press Bank (F2)
21. press Erase(F1)

C. From Live World

1. Press Sample Manage button
2. Press NEW (F3)
3. insert MIC into E-mu (in the back or through patch bay)
4. Set Threshold to 42dB
5. Set input to left for MONO
6. Set source to analog 44.1 kHz
7. Set length to 1.0 s
8. Set Dither to on
9. Arm Sampler(F5) and record
10. Press keep (F4)
11. Name the sample using cursor buttons to change field and Alpha wheel to change data
12. Press OK

To Edit the sample (creating a LOOP)

1. press Sample Edit button
2. Press Tools (F3)
3. Press Loop F1)
4. Turn "fix size" parameter Off
5. Press Keyboard key and listen to sound
6. Using cursor and Alpha Wheel, adjust Start, end to indicate start and
end points of loop
7. press AutoC (F5) autocorrelate
8. press OK (F6)
