Computer Music Department Helpdesk

These guidelines and policies cover the use of the Computer Music Department facilities, studios, computers, and equipment in Conservatory Rooms 307, 309, 312, 314, and 316.
- The facilities are shared by all the users of the Computer Music Department and students in our classes. The guidelines are intended to keep the facilities functioning optimally for all users.
- The studios are dedicated to academic composition, performance, research and education.
- Access to PCM Studios is limited to faculty, students, and guests of the department. Students who are registered as Degree-in-Progress may continue to use the facilities. Students taking a leave of absence lose access until they are re-enrolled in the Conservatory.
- Users are expected to abide by the Information Technology Acceptable Use Policies policies as set forth by both the Peabody Institute (http://www.peabody.jhu.edu/it/policies/acceptableuse.html) and by The Johns Hopkins University (http://www.it.johnshopkins.edu/policies/itpolicies.html). By accessing these systems, users consent to these policies, as well as the specific policies of the Computer Music Department.
- Quoting from the university documents: “any violations of these policies may result in loss of access to some or all of IT Resources and/or loss of access privileges to IT Resources. In addition, violators of these Policies may be subject to criminal and/or civil penalties and to disciplinary action, up to and including termination.”
- The studios are open 24 hours a day when the conservatory is in session
- Peabody security guards make rounds of the studios from time to time to make sure everything is secure. If asked, please provide them with your name and Peabody ID badge.
- The department cleans and maintains the studios ourselves. Please help keep the studios clean and in order. Eating, drinking, and smoking are not allowed in the studios.
- The Computer Music Department adheres to the Johns Hopkins Information Technology Acceptable Use Policy as well as the Acceptable Use Policy for the Peabody Institute. Please read these documents in their entirety.
- The computers in the Computer Music Department are dedicated to music making (composition, performance and research). Other computers are available on campus for general computing (the Music Library, the Peabody Computer Center, or the 24-hour Brody Learning Commons at the Homewood Campus).
- Much of the department’s software is controlled by various forms of license management tools. Attempting to override or disable any administrative controls, including the antivirus software or license management software, on any of the machines is a violation of Johns Hopkins University policy.
- A large-format printer is available for department usage. Please do not print multiple copies of a document; duplicate the remaining copies using a copy machine. Users must provide their own paper.
The equipment in each studio is configured to allow for flexible interconnections. Please do not disconnect or reconfigure any MIDI or audio cables or physically move any piece of equipment.
NOTE: The main power switch for Studio Alpha and Studio Zeta should be left on at all times, except in case of emergency (extreme heat, smoke or power outage).
Signing in and Out
When you first come in to any of the studios:
- Sign the Logbook.
- You can ask questions or report problems in the comment section of the log book. More urgent concerns can be emailed to the Computer Music Helpdesk (email@example.com).
- Manuals for the equipment may be found online in the Computer Music Wiki (https://pcm.peabody.jhu.edu/wiki)
When you leave:
- Normal the mixing console. Put everything away, including patch cords.
- Throw away all trash.
- Sign out in Logbook.
- Studio times are scheduled online in Booked Scheduler (https://pcm.peabody.jhu.edu/booked). The amount of studio time you may schedule will be based on studio demand each semester.
- Be sure to sign in and out of the studio logbook. The logbook will be checked against the Booked Scheduler to make sure studio time is being used as scheduled.
- If you schedule time you do not use you may lose access to the scheduling systems.
Keycard reader system
- A key card reader system has been installed on most studio doors of the Computer Music Department (316, 314, 312, 307 Conservatory). A key to room 309 is kept in room 312 for departmental students.
- The Computer Music faculty grants access to the key card system through security.
- Do not lend your ID card to anyone. You are will be held responsible damage or theft that happens when your card is logged into a studio.
These policies will be updated as needed and discussed in departmental seminars and classes.
